Avila Beach, located about 12 miles south of San Luis Obispo, is a place of discovery. It is a place of beautiful beaches, a warm, friendly micro-climate, calm rolling waves abundant with sea life, a quiet, charming village offering everything you might need to be comfortable, two walk-able piers for an ocean stroll in the moonlight, a harbor rich with fishing vessels, along with fresh seafood offered by many venders. It is a place to find rest for the weary, but for those who seek adventure and excitement, opportunities abound. For those who are seeking a place of rest and solitude, Avila Beach provides the perfect solution. It is a source of natural, mineral hot springs. Local spas and hot springs include Avila Hot Springs, as well as the Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort. Among other local spas and clubs, the vacationer can choose from hot-tub soaking, massage, yoga instruction, aroma therapy, and much more. Additionally, there are several amenity-laden hotels located on the beach. One could almost enjoy all of Avila Beach’s charms without even leaving their abode. Through an open window, the therapeutic utterances of the surf can be heard. From the upper level balconies, a romantic sunset can be shared. Or a meal can be shared in the open air of any of the beachside restaurants. And of course there is ample sand on the beaches upon which to stretch out and enjoy. Because Avila Beach is tucked away in a protected cove, it is compact and everything it has to offer is only a short walk away.
For those who are seeking a more active get-away, Avila Beach has much to offer within that arena as well. If golfing is on the list of must-do’s, there is the Avila Beach Golf Resort, featuring a par-71, 6,500-yard championship course. For recreation on the water, there are sport-fishing excursions offered by Patriot Sport Fishing, or kayak rentals through SLO Coast Kayaks. For faster paced excitement Wave Jammers rents jet-skis, and offers guided jet-ski tours of the coastline.
For those who like to burn Calories for fun, there are local hiking trails, bike rentals, and scenic biking routes for miles of coastal vistas. Avila Beach is located 3 miles off of Highway 101, and frontage roads with posted bike lanes run parallel to the highway through the coastal communities of Pismo Beach, Shell Beach, Grover Beach and Oceano. Bring along a few bucks and stop at the local fruit stands for fresh, juicy, locally grown produce for a little snack. Or for a shorter ride, there is a maintained bike trail that runs 12 miles north, into the city of San Luis Obispo.
On the cultural and entertainment side, Avila Beach hosts many annual and weekly events, particularly throughout the summer months. Along with all its other beauties and offerings, it lies within a natural amphitheater, making it the ideal location for concerts and other such events. A featured event is the Pops Symphony by the Sea held over Labor Day weekend. And still upcoming on this year’s schedule is Savor the Central Coast featuring a Chris Issak concert and a fireworks finale. This will be held Sunday, October 3, 2010. Also coming soon is the Oaktoberfest VI and Seafare 2010, both in October.
On an ongoing basis, Avila Beach features Art on the Beach, which runs every Sunday from May through Thanksgiving. Also there is the concert series, Concerts at the Cove, and the Avila Beach Fish and Farmer’s Market, held Friday’s from 4 to 8 pm, April through September.
With so much going on, and so many options, it’s hard to believe that Avila Beach is yet a quiet, secluded treasure, merely tucked away in a naturally protected cove, hidden from the hoards of travelers along the 101. It’s a place close by, that feels like it’s hundreds of miles away. It boasts a perfect, mild climate, quiet, spectacular beaches, visible marine mammals and sea birds, food, coffee, wine, shops, and markets just a few steps off the beach, and the friendliest folks around. And it’s all right here in the 805.
